A proper pillow is essential for a good night’s sleep
Do you ever feel a pain in your neck or back when you wake up in the morning? It could well be caused by an old, worn out pillow! Pillows wear very quickly, because they are constantly flattened by the weight of your head, there is a very easy way to test if your old pillow is still OK to use: fold it in half across your arm. If it stays folded it’s past its sell by date or it's time to buy a new one!
There are however a lot of different pillows on the market so it helps to know what you are looking for. Try online shops, such as: Nimbus Bed Linen which offers a wide range of the finest breathable, natural or microfibre fillings and where you can find the pillow that is exactly right for you. Look for a pillow which supports your head and reduces pressure on your neck and shoulders. You have to remember that your shoulders shouldn’t rest on the pillow, only your head and neck. That is why your pillow should be deep and conformable enough to fill the gap between your head and shoulders and will keep your head in line with your back and spine while you sleep. Did you know different sleeping positions require different pillows? If you tend to sleep on your side, you need a firm pillow that supports your head and neck. If you prefer sleeping on your back, a medium firm pillow will offer you more cushion. Those who sleep on their stomach should choose a soft pillow to ease the strain on the neck.
Next, you should ask yourself: Which filling to choose? There are many different fillings available on the market. They all have their pros and cons. You can choose between synthetic (microfibre or siliconised polyester hollowfibre), duck/goose down, duck goose feather, a down / feather mix, memory foam, silk and wool filling. Polyester filling is the cheapest option and it gives medium support. It’s also good for allergy sufferers. Duck or goose feather and down filling consists of a mix of small, fluffy feathers and down - the softest and lightest part of the plumage. Duck or goose feather and down pillows provide comfort and medium-firm support.
Most importantly, find a pillow that makes you feel comfortable. Experiment with a variety of types, and stick with the one that provides you with the best night's sleep.
